Mirador da Cova

At the Adegas Moure wine estate in Galicia, Spain an Accoya wood gazebo was installed – The Mirador da Cova. The gazebo sits above a natural canyon and provides a panoramic view of the Ribeira Sacra valley, a perfect passing place for tourists to admire the landscape, as well as for wine tastings, concerts and conferences.

The gazebo is made entirely from wood and integrates beautifully into the environment. Accoya wood panels for the decking and solid Accoya wood for the structural posts were chosen for exceptional durability, long lasting and minimal maintenance. The Accoya was supplied by Spanish distributor, Grupo Gamiz.

The owner of the wine estate had two requirements for his gazebo: he wanted sustainable materials and for it to integrate with the beautiful landscape. Accoya was the right choice and met both of these needs.

Architect, Arrokabe Arquitectos, investigated the sustainability of Accoya. He discovered the wood is from FCS certified forests and holds the Cradle to Cradle gold certification. Accoya wood is non-toxic despite modification and is recyclable at end-of-life.

The structural Accoya wood posts were made using a glue lamination technique. This gives added strength to the gazebo and over time vegetation will grow and cover them. Framework company, Galanas, installed the Accoya with assistance from the builder, Joalpe.

The Mirador da Cova has been awarded in the international category of the Wood design & building Awards organized by the Canadian Wood Council with a “Citation Award”. See this project featured in the winners’ video here.
